What We Bury - Book 10 - Detective Madison Knight

She’s dying, and she knows it. If only she can stay alive long enough to leave one last message. As the rain beats against the metal roof, she uses her blood-soaked fingertip to scrawl on the floorboards… The letters GB.

Detective Madison Knight has been house hunting, but a call from her real estate agent has nothing to do with finding the perfect property. She’s found a woman’s body, stabbed multiple times. Madison arrives on scene and is presented with an unknown Jane Doe and two letters written in blood. There’s no murder weapon, and it seems Doe was attacked somewhere else.

As Madison works to find justice for the victim, Madison’s own life is put at risk. What she comes to discover is some people will go to extreme lengths to protect their secrets—even as far as murder. But will learning that lesson come too late for her?

Carolyn Arnold does not disappoint in the latest installment of the Detective Madison Knight series! We are immediately pulled into a case that crosses paths with her on a personal level, putting her life in danger.

Madison is at a turning point in her life. She's developed a relationship with Troy but still has reservations about the direction they are headed. Her emotions are all over the place, causing misunderstandings and the potential for another heartbreak.

We immediately dive into a case of a Jane Doe who is found in the garage of a homeowner readying for an open house. Madison is determined to find out who she is and why she was murdered. The case connects back to her side-investigation into the corrupt members of the police department. In her typical fashion, she puts 110% into the investigation, even at the risk of losing her lover, friends, and professional relationships.

Madison's obsession nearly takes her life and also reveals the illness she's been struggling with and unwilling to face. We get to see Troy step up in a big way here, but will her relentless pursuit for justice be the final straw? Her actions threaten to put all of her relationships (and life!) at risk.

My emotional strings were pulled hard throughout this book and I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to see a deeper, softer side of Madison. I was determined to finish this book in one sitting because I had to know how the case was going to affect Madison. It's a big shift in her life -- one that could potentially make or break a person.

Arnold is phenomenal at making us feel, see, and hear everything Madison is experiencing through her point of view. Although progress is made in the department corruption, I picked up on the foreshadowing of more sinister, shocking connections to come to light. I can't wait!
