The Resurrection of Wildflowers | Micalea Smeltzer

It took me a while to learn that sometimes no matter how much, or how hard you love someone, or something, you have to let them go. You can’t save a sinking ship.

Sometimes, you have someone else you have to be strong for, who needs you more.

You make a choice.

A devastating one.

And you hope, maybe one day, they’ll come back to you.

My Thoughts:

Let me start by saying that the first half of this duet literally ripped my heart out. I was distraught for several hours after finishing. While I wasn't sure with the direction that this book would take, I had hopes that it would bring everyone the closure they so desperately needed.

Picking back up six years later, we dive into Salem's new life as a mom and learn that she turned to Caleb for solace after leaving Thayer. I think back to when I had my first son at 19 and my decisions were not always sound. But that is how we grow, learn, and (gasp!) CHANGE! Without these experiences, Salem wouldn't be the woman we re-meet. She lost her childhood and now with cancer taking her mother, she's facing more trials.

Thayer's depth of love for Salem is completely swoon worthy. Even though he was older and assumed to be more experienced, I think he took more life lessons to heart in this case. He began going to counseling and let go of his grumpy, selfish mannerisms (well, not completely, but enough that it helped him heal). Salem is still young and only in her mid-twenties, so I believe that Micalea stayed true to reality by making her decisions age-appropriate.

Caleb is a pure angel. I can understand his frustration and the bit of hesitation when Thayer resurfaces in their lives. I hope he finds happiness and someone who can love him as he deserves. To me, Salem and Thayer are pure soulmates. Their love is undeniable and I thoroughly enjoy their passion for each other.

I do think these could have been combined into one book; however, the beauty of the covers and titles that are perfect for each timeline of the story more than make up for that. I am still in love with the duet and highly recommend it!

I received a complimentary ARC for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.
