Her Sister’s Death by K. L. Murphy November 28 – December 23, 2022 Virtual Book Tour
She wanted the truth. She should have known better.
When her sister is found dead in a Baltimore hotel room, reporter Val Ritter’s world is turned upside down. An empty pill bottle at the scene leads the police to believe the cause of death is suicide. With little more than her own conviction, Val teams up with Terry Martin, a retired detective who has his own personal interest in the case, to prove that something more sinister is possible.
In 1921, Bridget Wallace, a guest on the brink of womanhood, is getting ready to marry an eligible older man. But what seems like a comfortable match soon takes a dark turn. Does the illustrious history of the stately Franklin hotel hide another, lesser known history of death?

My Thoughts:
I love a book that can draw you in to the point where you don't hear phones ringing, people talking, dogs barking....you know, normal everyday noises. This book a fully immersive read that I only put down long enough to use the restroom and grab a bite to eat. Setting-wise, I felt the pages opening up a live-action movie before my eyes. I felt the air, often thick and heavy with a mysterious note I couldn't quite place.
Since I read this book over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, I was able to slow down and read thoroughly. I like to think I'm clever enough to figure out the mystery ahead of time, but K. L. Murphy proved me wrong. I was wrapped up in every second and still found myself being surprised by the connection of the past to the present as well as the conclusion.
This would make for an incredible movie. I felt that the characters, past and present, were relatable, worthy of empathy, and well-developed. Val and Terry are a good duo, balancing each other with knowledge of history and heartfelt connection to those involved. I found myself curious as to how many others would weave into the history of the hotel after I was finished reading, almost as if the hotel was literally calling out with voices begging to have their stories told, too.
I received a complimentary copy for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.
