When Leah Miller's entire Amish family was murdered ten years ago, the person believed responsible took his own life. Since then, Leah left the Amish and joined the police force. Now, after another Amish woman is found murdered with the same MO, it becomes clear that the wrong man may have been blamed for her family's deaths.

As Leah and the new police chief, Dalton Cooper, work long hours struggling to fit the pieces together in order to catch the killer, they can't help but grow closer. When secrets from both of their pasts begin to surface, an unexpected connection between them is revealed. But this is only the beginning. Could it be that the former police chief framed an innocent man to keep the biggest secret of all buried? And what will it mean for Leah--and Dalton--when the full truth comes to light?

USA Today bestselling author Mary Alford keeps you guessing as two determined souls plumb the dark depths of the past in order to forge a brighter future--together.

My Thoughts:

As a child, I grew up in an area near an Amish community. We would buy delicious breads, homemade candles, and an assortment of canned and jellied items. Their lifestyle has always been intriguing, so I was instantly drawn to this book.

The tragedy that Leah experienced as a young girl has come back to haunt her with a vengeance. She suspects that her adoptive father, the former chief, was victim to the same unknown man. This leads her to fight for a spot to investigate the new crimes that are eerily similar to her own. She fights to keep her adoptive mother, Marge, healthy while also safe throughout the chain of events, showing how difficult of a position she is in.

Dalton joins the force with his own personal connection that links him and Leah together on a deeper level than she initially knows. He carries a heavy load of guilt that also helps drive him to protect Leah while simultaneously hunting a killer. He is very respectful and patient in implementing himself into the role.

The suspense is steady and constantly building -- exactly how I enjoy it! Even when situations were calm and safe, you could still feel the buzz of suspense lying just under the surface. That's exactly what made me read this book within a day. I would love to read more of Leah and Dalton, including them working together on cases and the building of a relationship. Definitely worth 5-stars!

I received a complimentary copy for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.
