How to Complete a Reading Challenge

The beauty of reading is that there’s something for everyone. Whether you chase the thrill of a good murder mystery or your prefer a story of romance, there are sure to be endless titles to choose from.

If you are looking to find some good books and try titles you might not normally pick, a reading challenge is the perfect place to start. Every reading challenge is different, but you can adjust it to fit your goals and reading preferences. To get you started, here are 4 tips for completing a reading challenge.

1. Decide on Your Goal

This is the most important step. Decide why you want to complete a reading challenge. Are you trying to read more daily? Would you like to diversify your reading list? Are you prone to judging a book by it’s cover and not giving the story a fair chance? Your reason for completing a reading challenge will turn into your goal.

2. Finding the Right Challenge

There are many types of reading challenges. Some encourage you to read a certain amount of books in a time period while others focus more on the type of content you’re reading. Be sure to choose a reading challenge that matches your goals.

3. Create Some Accountability

It’s easy to set a goal and then forget about it. This happens yearly with New Year’s resolutions. However, to follow through with completing the goal you’ll need to hold yourself accountable. Some do this by printing out the challenge and putting it in a location they’ll see every day. Others set reminders on their phone to read. Some tell their friends and family so they can help hold them accountable. No matter which option you choose, be sure there is something keeping you motivated.

4. Reward yourself for a job well done

Speaking of staying motivated, setting a reward for the end of the challenge is a great way to stay on track. This could be as simple as treating yourself to a nice meal or rewarding yourself with a new book. Find something that will motivate you and use it as a final reward.
