Finding Grace | Gary Lee Miller

Finding Grace follows a young woman, Judith Lee, who grew up with her very poor grandmother, Grace, and grandfather, Virgil, in Nashville. As a child, she was bullied and mocked in school. After attending Vanderbilt University on full scholarship, Judith moves to California, where she starts her own tech company and becomes extraordinarily successful and wealthy.

Grace calls Judith with a dying wish…for Judith to travel from Los Angeles to Nashville to come visit her. But, there’s a catch, Judith must make the journey by bus.

Each day of Judith’s bus journey becomes a story, as the people she encounters and places she visits along the way challenge her to rethink life. Finding Grace is about Judith’s transformation back into the real world during this journey as a result of the people she meets on the bus, how she deals with the imminent passing of her grandmother, and how all this changes her future life plans. There are tears and laughter throughout, with interesting, well-developed characters whom readers would recognize from their own lives. Today, more people are reflecting on what is and is not important. Finding Grace provides food for thought on many levels, and inspiration, recognizing each of us are on our own journey in hope of finding grace.

My Thoughts:

As a Tennessean myself, I always love finding home state authors! Overall, this book is a pleasurable read, taking you through moments of tears, laughter, and satisfaction.

From humble beginnings, Judith finds a way to overcome the hand that life dealt her. She has to work hard to obtain many things that others are simply handed. Her perseverance is admirable, but as this book details, we can easily be humbled right back down in a moment. One event can take us right back to where it all began.

I enjoyed the unique setup of the story in how each part of the journey/bus ride was an adventure all on its own. It's easy to get wrapped up in our own lives, careers, hobbies, etc. so it was nice to be reminded that we need to slow down from time to time. We gain more in life by learning compassion, empathy, and truly listening to those around us. Their impact can often be profound even when we think they have nothing of value to offer.

If you're looking for a read that will pick you up and leave you with all the feel-goods, this is one I would recommend adding to your list. It helps bring you out of the hustle and bustle of our daily lives that are constantly on-the-go. Take a break, block out all distractions, and lose yourself while Finding Grace!
