My Thoughts:
Being a teen is difficult enough as you try to navigate the hormonal changes, along with the expectations that rise as you age. Add in the responsibilities that come with the sensory powers and these teens are carrying a lot on their shoulders.
The first third of the book took me a bit to get into. I had to keep reminding myself that this was YA and to approach it as such. My teenager had a much better feel for the book and gave me some insight that helped me continue reading. The descriptions are a bit overboard at times, but if you let yourself immerse into the plot, you'll discover how it pulls from all your senses. Creative, if you ask me! Adds to the powers of the teens by creating an overload for the reader. If you think of it as an immersive read, you'll soon find yourself pulled in.
Division is such a current issue in the world and I enjoyed how the author brought the kids together with authentic friendships, hardships, and experiences. The settings further test the kids and their new powers, developing added senses of loyalty, responsibility, and flaws as "normal, every-day" kids. My son felt that the characters were well-developed to the point that he could see them as real-life teenagers that he goes to school with. As a parent, I couldn't relate to how they reacted to situations, but it played well into the plot.
We get a clear-cut good vs. evil superhero novel that brings a sense of adventure, outside of the box thinking, and allows young readers to push their imagination. Solid read!
I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.
