Airborne by DiAnn Mills

Heather Lawrence’s long-awaited vacation to Salzburg wasn’t supposed to go like this. Mere hours into the transatlantic flight, the Houston FBI agent is awakened when passengers begin exhibiting horrific symptoms of an unknown infection. As the virus quickly spreads and dozens of passengers fall ill, Heather fears she’s witnessing an epidemic similar to ones her estranged husband studies for a living—but this airborne contagion may have been deliberately released.

While Heather remains quarantined with other survivors, she works with her FBI colleagues to identify the person behind this attack. The prime suspect? Dr. Chad Lawrence, an expert in his field . . . and Heather’s husband. The Lawrences’ marriage has been on the rocks since Chad announced his career took precedence over his wife and future family and moved out.

As more victims fall prey days after the initial outbreak, time’s running out to hunt down the killer, one who may be closer to the victims than anyone ever expected.

Reading this book during a global pandemic helps add to the suspense of what we're experiencing in real life. We aren't able to physically see the virus -- only the side effects. We jump right into the action and it was nearly impossible for me to put it down.

The only downside to this book is that I felt like Heather and Chad needed a deeper character profile. I wanted to feel more for her experience while also being concerned for her unborn child. But once we dive into Chad and the type of husband he's been to her.

The most intriguing moments for me were when the survivors are quarantined immediately following their return. We see the best and worst of the world -- all in one small group. Friendships are built and lost very quickly; but it was a good reminder that we only get people for a season.

From early on, I was sticking to my gut feeling about who was behind the release of the virus. The actions and remarks of this particular character leaves a slimy, creepy feeling. Throughout the investigation, I was questionable of when they would be revealed as the culprit. Then BOOM! Tables turned and I had to admit that I was wrong.

I was sad that the book had to end but was ultimately satisfied with how all of the events unfolded.
